City of Lights, Day 2

We spent Saturday morning exploring the Musee de Louvre, the world's most visited museum. The museum was HUGE. We were there for 4 hours and only had time to see the most popular pieces of art.

In the courtyard of the Louvre Palace. The museum originally began as a fortress built in the late 12th century under Phillip II.

Venus de Milo
This ancient Greek statue was created sometime between 130 and 100 BC! It is believed to depict Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty.

A special collection of art from Meroe, capital of a great empire on the Nile, was currently on display. Here is an ancient mummy...

Winged Bull
These magical figures once guarded an entrance to the palace of Sargon II between 721 and 705 BC.

The famous Mona Lisa in front of a HUGE crowd and behind thick layers of glass.

Other famous art and objects we saw were:
The Winged Victory of Samothrace
Coronation Crown of Louis XV
The Wedding Feast at Cana, Veronese
The Raft of Medusa, T. Gericault
Seated Statue of Ramses II
Liberty Leading the People, Eugene Delacroix

Brita, Christine, and I in front of the Arc de Triomphe, which honors those who fought for France.

We finally got a nice, relaxing break in the afternoon and enjoyed a river boat cruise on the Seine River. I even fell asleep for a little bit...it was a long day!

Notre-Dame!

A view of the Eiffel Tower from the river.

At the top of the Eiffel Tower!
It is about 81 stories tall and was built as the entrance arch for the 1889 World's Fair.

Magnificent views from the top!

We enjoyed some strawberry and nutella crepes after dinner and watched the Eiffel Tower sparkle!

The crepe man!

A picture with our French hats!
